A native New Yorker, Chungsanim Betty has trained under Grandmaster David Herbert since 1997. Betty is a 4th Dan in HapKiDo, only one of three women to attain that level under Grandmaster Herbert. She’s also trained in Wing Chun, Shaolin, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu and KumDo. Chungsanim Betty is a 3rd Dan under Soke John Davis in Kumite Ryu Jujitsu, has trained under Professor Dominick Brioché in HapKiDo/Jujitsu and Grandmaster Thomas Choi in Tae Kwon Do/KumDo, and has over 3,000 hours of teaching adults and children.
A breast cancer survivor, Chungsanim Betty credits her martial arts practice for helping her fight the disease. As a woman of color, Chungsanim Betty is an advocate for civil rights and, especially, of women’s rights. She views martial arts as crucial towards achieving spiritual centeredness and self-empowerment. She is honored, as a woman and mother, to be a part of the Women’s Martial Arts Network and believes that if everyone did martial arts, the world would be a better place.
